Spotlight on... Falmouth and Penryn

Located on the South West coast of Cornwall at the mouth of the river Fal, the areas of Falmouth and Penryn are hubs of creative influence in the county.

Falmouth and Penryn are the latest areas to be featured in our 'spotlight on.' section which showcases different areas of Cornwall. The aim is to bring you news of regeneration projects, both lifestyle and commercial, and provide the latest on exciting new workspace developments.

Tremough Innovation Centre
Plans are in place for a £9 million business innovation centre to be located next to the Tremough campus of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) creating workspace for 64 businesses. Housed in an iconic building, the Innovation Centre has been designed to make a statement about the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation.

The Innovation Centre will provide an environment which supports entrepreneurs and businesses in the early stages of development. Proximity to the CUC hub campus, will allow businesses to share expertise and facilities, particularly in media and design and environmental and earth technologies.

The project will provide workspace for over 300 people with a range of office sizes suitable for both small start-up and large, established companies.

Shared facilities for businesses within the Tremough Innovation Centre will include a conference room, several meeting rooms and a cafe as well as full-time business support and mentoring services. The building is due to open in 2009.

Jubilee Wharf, Penryn
Jubilee Wharf is on the edge of Penryn's harbour. It's an iconic new business premises that's created a community within a community. Together the two buildings house 12 studio workshops with six residential flats above, a Nursery, offices for community organisations, the ZedShed public hall and a Cafe. A total of 20 businesses are located in the zero carbon building, bringing great expertise and skills to what is fast becoming a hub of creativity and innovation. Jubilee Wharf is one of the leading zero carbon buildings in the country. The unique design of live/work space provides a creative and inspirational environment for like minded businesses.

Two such businesses have been supported by Cornwall Pure Business. SciArt Solutions and SEA Marketing have both moved to the county in the past two years, and have immersed themselves into the Cornish business community.

Hidden Art Cornwall
Hidden Art Cornwall was launched in 2005 as the first social franchise of Hidden Art London, in association with University College Falmouth. Based on the Tremough campus, Penryn, Hidden Art Cornwall is a not-for-profit membership organisation that promotes and supports designer/makers who live or work in Cornwall. The aim is to raise the national profile of Cornish design and provide a vital network connecting Cornish designer/makers with one another and the wider design community.

Translating creativity into practical output is a difficult and complex process and this is where Hidden Art Cornwall can help by improving access to information, enabling the exchange of ideas and expertise and providing a platform for designer/makers to exhibit and sell work to key markets and the public.
 
The main selling event of the year is the Hidden Art Cornwall Design Fair at Godolphin House over the August bank holiday. This unique event showcases the wealth of talent Cornwall's designer-maker community has to offer and attracts several thousand visitors from across the country.

Hidden Art Cornwall is a social franchise of Hidden Art in association with University College Falmouth and is part funded by the European Union.

Falmouth Business Park
Situated on the outskirts of Falmouth is the newly developed office park at Falmouth Business Park, which is an established office location providing a high quality business environment. The site will offer 25,840 sq ft of speculative office business park accommodation. This is the first phase of two proposed phases of development by Priority Sites Ltd on this site. The units vary in size between 100 - 400 m2 (1,100 - 4,300sqft) in both single and two storey, semi detached buildings.  The units will be high quality, fully fitted and very sustainable having been designed to achieve a BREEAM "Very Good" award. They will incorporate renewable energy technologies such as ground source heat pumps and rainwater recycling.
